Althusser in China
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article analyzes the reception and diffusion of Althusser's work and thought in China, mainly from the point of view of the Chinese translations. The first Chinese translation of Althusser took place in 1964 and For Marx was translated into Chinese in the 1980s. However, Chinese scholars could not really understand Althusser's work, nor take his “theoretical anti-humanism” seriously, due to the singularities of the Chinese cultural context of the 1980s. The publications in 2003 of the compilation Philosophy and Politics: A Reader of Althusser, together with The Future Lasts Forever, marks the beginning of a new comprehensive, deep and accurate reading of a “plural Althusser” in China. The Chinese translation of On Reproduction of Capitalism made it possible to re-evaluate Althusser's influential ideas as a whole. Nowadays the Chinese edition of Althusser's Selected Works, a large ongoing project, meticulously planned and coordinated by several specialists, offers a solid basis for future research in Althusserian studies. The rediscovery of Althusser in China in the new century can be considered not only as a return of theoretical journey, but also a fulfillment of his long wish to visit China.
