John Dewey and the question about the direction of inquiry
Main Article Content
Abstract
In line with his general purpose of reconnecting the realm of common sense and scientific inquiry, John Dewey raises the question of the direction of science, so as to regulate its consequences and enrich the course of experience. The aim of the article is to determine the epistemic and political dimensions of that question. To achieve this goal, common sense is defined and characterized considering its genetic and functional relation to scientific research, and an analysis of scientific inquiry in two distinct senses, namely logical and political, is provided. In this context, Dewey’s undervalued idea about the socially planned use of science is considered. When related to the notion of public, this idea supports the claim that evaluating the path from common sense to science and back to common sense requires an epistemic-political approach to inquiry, for which Dewey offers solid foundations and fruitful perspectives.
